Detasseling is a summer job that lasts from 2 to 3 1/2 weeks. We start anywhere around July 10 to July 15, depending on the growing season. The purpose of the job is to create a corn hybred by removing the tassels from 4 out of 5 rows that are planted in a field. Each worker is assigned a row that they are responsible to detassel. A machine has already remove a majority of the tassels and the worker is responsible for getting the rest. They simply pull the tassel straight up until it pops out and then they drop it on the ground. It's that simple.
